Welcome to New Zealand Olympic Event rider Joe Meyer’s website.

Here you will find the story of how Joe developed his equestrian expertise from an early age in New Zealand through to representing his country in the 2008 Olympics, the 2006 World Equestrian Games and back to back top 10 placings at Badminton in 2006 and 2007.

Joe’s bid for World Championship glory has been cut short due to equine fitness issues.

As most will have heard already, the campaign was dealt a bitter blow when Snip suffered a freak accident in the stable at the Hartpury trials two weeks ago and sustained a bone chip to his hock. (He is now recovering at Churchill Stud and updates on his progress will appear on the website).
Joe still had Clifton Lush in contention, as he was due to compete at Highclere last weekend. Sadly however, Joe had to make the difficult decision to withdraw before cross-country due to fitness concerns.

Despite Sanskrit’s excellent recent form, including 2nd in the British Open Championships, we understand that he was not considered to be in contention by the selectors. Although he is fully qualified for WEG, he has not competed at a CCI4*, one of the parameters outlined in the selection criteria.

Whilst this is a huge disappointment for Joe and his support crew, Joe will still travel to WEG with the team and provide ground-based support for the Kiwi efforts.
Upon his return from the US, Joe will target Pau CCI4* with Sanskrit and the CIC2* with Intrepid. Clifton Lush’s programme for the remainder of the year is under review, with Pau CCI4* a possibility. However, given the intensity of the build-up to WEG, he may now be given a spell and then begin an early preparation for Badminton which is to be held two weeks earlier than normal over Easter THURSDAY 21st – MONDAY 25th APRIL 2011.
